Call out boxes and pull-quotes

Additional features

Pressbooks can create call-out boxes and pull quotes to make your text visually more appealing and highlight certain text elements. These boxes can be colored to help them stand out and separate them from the rest of your text and provide your students with structural clues.

To indicate where you want call-out boxes or pull quotes in your manuscript, add

<<call-out box open>>

The title of the call-out box (e.g., Learning Outcomes)

The content you want in the call-out box.

Call-out box types

Call-out boxes can be the width of the readers’ screen or created as a right-hand sidebar. Call-out boxes are often used for the following purposes:

  • Identify Learning objectives or outcomes that align with the textbook content, typically identified at the beginning of each unit, chapter, or chapter section.

Learning Objectives

  • and livability issues to be addressed at the state and local government level

Pull quotes

Pressbooks can generate pull quotes either on the left or right of the text. Please note that in the digital version of the text, it can be difficult to position the pull quote in a very specific spot since the text will reformat depending on the size of the reader’s screen.

Pull quotes should be used sparingly and only to highlight important points or ideas.

Example:

Curabitur eget orci a metus fringilla pellentesque. Sed a condimentum nisi. Phasellus eu quam ultrices, venenatis sapien id, sollicitudin velit. Phasellus dignissim ipsum orci, vitae vulputate nulla blandit at. Suspendisse vel malesuada tortor. Nulla vel turpis justo. Nulla facilisi. Mauris malesuada, dui a tristique mattis, elit dui vehicula risus, eu hendrerit ante lorem id libero. Donec id eros a orci dignissim vehicula vitae dignissim tellus.
